Song of the Day, July 17: Together Or Alone by Sebadoh

Today’s song is Together Or Alone by Sebadoh. It appears on 1994’s Bakesale, an album that found the band in transition. With founding member Eric Gaffney leaving early in the sessions, replaced by short-time member Bob Fay, the disc is more than ever a collection of strong divergent songs rather than a cohesive set. It works oddly well despite this, with the contributions by the three members jostling against each other in a creative, accessible way. Together Or Alone is the final track, wrapping up the album on a contemplative note. One of singer Lou Barlow’s narrative songs, it dissects a relationship in crisis in complete, thoughtful sentences. It’s certainly lo-fi, but quiet and reflective unlike many of the loud, uptempo numbers on the album.
It was never my intention
To blindly feed the boy/girl game
I know romance isn’t everything
But I’m obsessing just the same
Today is Barlow’s 46th birthday. Wish him many happy returns and enjoy this great live performance of a classic Sebadoh track, recorded during the 2011 Bakesale reissue concerts.
