Song of the Day, June 5: Dreams by Fleetwood Mac

Today’s song is Dreams by Fleetwood Mac. The biggest hit from their classic album, Rumours, it captures the feel of that album and the personal crises of the band perfectly.

Now here you go again
You say you want your freedom
Well who am I to keep you down
It’s only right that you should
Play the way you feel it
But listen carefully to the sound
Of your loneliness
Like a heartbeat, drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering what you had
And what you lost

Singer and songwriter Stevie Nicks created the song in less than an hour during a break in studio time for the album. It is both deeply personal (clearly relating to her breakup with Lindsey Buckingham) and elevates easily to the universal. It was the band’s only #1 in the U.S. Enjoy this haunting song today.
