Song of the Day, December 8: Drink Before the War by Sinéad O’Connor

Today’s song is Drink Before the War by Sinéad O’Connor. Before all the controversies, before the brilliant if overexposed Prince cover, before most people knew her name, this striking singer from Ireland released a debut album of astonishing power. Demonstrating her songwriting strength and her whisper-to-a-scream vocal power, The Lion and the Cobra features nine tracks that range from folk to dance rock with great intensity and not a dud in the batch. While it’s hard for me to pick a single favorite, this song manages to best capture the overall spirit of the album and her singing. O’Connor turns 45 today; wish her a happy birthday and celebrate her talent with this song.
