Song of the Day, October 19: Rip In Heaven by ’til tuesday

Today’s song is Rip In Heaven by ’til tuesday. This wonderful band, fronted by Aimee Mann, was known for their literate pop and poignant relationship songs when they recorded their masterpiece, their third and final album, Everything’s  Different Now. Mann had recently broken up with longtime partner Jules Shear, and this album contains her reflections on love and loss with a more personal thread. Using her art to expel her demons, she crafted one of the finest post-breakup albums ever made, both deeply personal and transcentently universal. Rip In Heaven is the pinnacle of the album.

So long, I’m sorry darling.
I was counting to forever
And never even got to ten
So long, I’m sorry darling
When we found a rip in heaven
We should have just ascended then.

Enjoy this live performance of this brilliant song today.
