Billboard #1’s for the Week Ending August 15, 1981

This week’s Time Capsule!

Chart Song Act Weeks
Hot 100 Endless Love Diana Ross & Lionel Richie 1
R & B I’m In Love Evelyn King 1
Country I Don’t Need You Kenny Rogers 1
Adult Contemporary I Don’t Need You Kenny Rogers 6
Rock Urgent Foreigner 4
Album Precious Time Pat Benatar 1

This week sees Pat Benatar achieve her single week at the top of the Billboard Album charts with her third album, Precious Time. Benatar was a staple of 80s radio, racking up 17 hits (15 in the Top 40 and four in the Top 10) and coming in at #32 in the top artists of the decade. This great album features two hits. Fire and Ice is at #26 on the Hot 100 this week, on its way to #17. My favorite Benatar song, the powerful Promises In the Dark sneaked into the Top 40 at #38 in October 1981. Although this was her only #1 album, Benatar enjoyed enormous success on the album charts. All nine of her albums in the 80s were best sellers, with two going gold, five platinum, and two multi-platinum (including Precious Time).
