Billboard #1’s for the Week Ending July 25, 1981

This week’s Time Capsule!

Chart Song Act Weeks
Hot 100 The One That You Love Air Supply 1
R & B Double Dutch Bus Frankie Smith 2
Country Feels So Right Alabama 2
Adult Contemporary I Don’t Need You Kenny Rogers 3
Rock Urgent Foreigner 1
Album Logn Distance Voyager The Moody Blues 1

This week sees Foreigner practice a bit of numerology. When the band found itself reduced to a quartet in time for their fourth album, they simply named it 4. The number shows up in many ways during its long, successful run. Starting with the first hit, Urgent, the album had four top 40 hits, tying a record for the time. Urgent itself was riddled with fours:

  • This week is its first of four weeks at #1 on the Rock charts
  • It peaked at #4
  • for four weeks
  • It also jumped from #8 to #4 and dropped from #4 to #8, moving four positions in and out of its peak.

Given that the second single, Waiting For A Girl Like You, was trapped at #2 for an unprecedented 10 weeks, perhaps they should have named the album #1…
