Song of the Day, July 22: Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk by Rufus Wainwright

Today’s song is Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk by Rufus Wainwright. Taken from his enchanting second album, 2001’s Poses, the song was my introduction to Wainwright’s music. Rufus wittily ponders the things he craves in life and their (lack of) healthy benefits.

Cigarettes and chocolate milk
These are just a couple of my cravings
Everything it seems i like’s a little bit stronger
A little bit thicker
A little bit harmful for me

I admire Wainwright’s openness and honesty. He has been out and proud since he began his career and is outspoken about the joys and challenges of his life, both lyrically and in the press. Wish Rufus the enjoyment of a guilty pleasure today as he celebrates his 38th birthday.
