Song of the Day, April 30: In Spite of Me by Morphine

Today’s song is In Spite of Me by Morphine. I first encountered this song and Morphine’s music over the film Spanking the Monkey. The moody yet energetic passion of Morphine was ideally suited to this very dark comedy. I missed the name of the band during the credits and searched for weeks for a soundtrack (which doesn’t exist). I finally discovered the identity of the band and bought their astonishing Cure for Pain, which includes this great song.

Sadly, Morphine’s lead singer, Mark Sandman, died onstage at the age of 46 in 1999, ending Morphine’s unique musical voice. Enjoy the tender, quiet, sad beauty of In Spite of Me today.
