Song of the Day, April 16: Keep It To Yourself by Gerry Rafferty (The Humblebums)

Today’s song, Keep It to Yourself, is a little-known early recording by Gerry Rafferty. Today would have been his 64th birthday; he died in January of this year of liver failure. Early in his career, Rafferty was a member of The Humblebums. The band included Billy Connolly, perhaps better known for his stand up comedy and acting (Mrs. Brown) careers. Gerry next co-founded Stealers Wheel (Stuck In the Middle With You) and then went solo.
After his huge international hit Baker Street in 1978, Transatlantic Records repackaged Rafferty’s songs from the Humblebum days on the album Gerry Rafferty. That’s where I first encountered this song, not knowing it was actually recorded by the band until many years later. It has always been one of my favorite Rafferty compositions and performances. Apparently Gerry agreed, as he re-recorded the tune in 2003; the new version is quite fine, but I have a personal preference for the simplicity of the original. Enjoy Keep It to Yourself by the Humblebums.
